How Can You Tell Which Molecule Can Dissolve In Water?

By Ask It!

I have a test tomorrow in bio and I was wondering how (when given 2 molecules), to tell which one more/soluble in water? Is it based on the type of bonds (whether they are nonpolar or polar??) I know that nonpolar substances do not dissolve in water but how can you tell if a molecule is nonpolar?

The first thing you have to look at is whether or not the molecule has hydrogen bonds (H connected to N, O, or F). Anything w/ hydrogen bonds is soluble. Also, if the molecule has any unpaired electrons. If so, then it is soluble. If the molecule is uneven in any way (it isn’t balanced in a 3-D structure), then it is soluble.
